We’ve all heard them, the weird thoughts that everyone has around witchcraft and Wicca. We’re a pretty misunderstood bunch of people, let’s be honest. There is a lack of education around the path and so people assume that what they see on tv is a true representation of what we do. So today we’re going to debunk some of those myths.
We worship the devil.
May as well start with the big one. This is a misconception that comes up time and time again. Witches and Wiccans do not believe in the devil let alone worship him. The devil is a Christian belief and has never been part of the Wiccan religion. Similarly because of this Witches and Wiccans also don’t believe in Hell.
We are evil.
This seems to follow on quite nicely. Now I can’t speak for all of us, every culture and religion has evil people, but as a group we’re peaceful. We follow the Wiccan Rede which says “An it harm none, do what ye will”, meaning do what you want as long as it’s not going to harm anyone. We also believe in the rule of three, our version of karma. What we do, be it good or bad, will be returned threefold.
We perform sacrifices.
This one is partly true. We don’t sacrifice goats to the ritual fire, not that sort of sacrifice, that would go again the Rede. When we use the sacrifice we mean giving something up, like you would for lent for example. We do however give offerings to deities be it food, wine etc.
Wicca isn’t a real religion.
This one can depend on where you are. Although Wicca is a real religion, it is not recognised in some countries as being “official”. The US do recognise the Sabbats, and Wiccan children are allowed to be off school on these days.
Wicca is the “old religion”
Nope. Not even close. Wicca was founded by Gerald Gardner in 1954. It is however based on ancient beliefs and rituals that were performed centuries ago. They have been adapted to be performed in the modern world.
What other misconceptions have you come across?
